When children have a good experience, whether it’s at school or at the dentist, then they can learn to process the realities of life a little bit better. They can gain courage and confidence to do hard things. Coming to the dentist is a hard thing. It’s not fun. It’s scary. It sometimes can hurt. Anytime those things can be alleviated so that it’s a process that isn’t so traumatizing, then kids are prepared to come back and to have checkups and to learn how to take good care of their teeth so that they can continue that into their adult lives. We’re going to need our teeth forever. If coming to the dentist is a traumatic, negative experience as a child, when they go out on their own they’re not going to continue to take good care of their teeth. They’re going to avoid negative experiences. It’s super important for the rest of their life that they have a good experience as a child in dentistry so that they can take good care of their teeth forever.
