An athletic mouthguard would be important for any child playing any kind of contact sport: basketball, football, wrestling. I know when I was a kid, I had a chipped tooth from wrestling as a kid but a lot of times, younger kids that have changing mouths where they're getting new teeth and losing teeth, a lot of times the best type of mouthguard would be a boil and bite one: one that you put in hot water and then you bite on it because your mouth's going to be changing quite a bit. Once they get a little bit older and have all their permanent teeth, then we'd recommend maybe something a little more customized, a custom mouthguard. With those customized mouthguards we can make them any color, whatever you want as far as if you want your team colors or your favorite color, we can do that. But it's very important—dental trauma—you’d hate to lose a tooth just because you weren't wearing a mouthguard.
- Cushion your child’s teeth when the inevitable bumps and falls occur.
- Fit more comfortably and provide more protection than a boil-and-bite device.
- Help prevent costly injuries to developing teeth and gums.
- Protect your child against potential cosmetic embarrassment.
- Allow your child to speak and breathe more comfortably than with a store-bought mouthguard.
- Hold up better and last longer than cheaper, one-size-fits-all mouthguards.

Teach Your Kid the Importance of Wearing a Mouthguard
Just like people protect their heads with helmets during contact sports, your child should protect their teeth and mouth with a professionally made mouthguard.
Contact sports like football and boxing aren’t the only activities that we recommend athletic mouthguards for. If your child enjoys any of the following activities, you should schedule a consultation to get them a custom mouthpiece:
- Mountain biking
If you decide to get a new mouthguard for your young sports star, we will take precise impressions and send them out to a lab we work with. In about a week, you can return to pick up their specially made mouthguard!
We know that the more comfortable the mouthguard feels, the more likely your child is to faithfully wear it. That’s why Dr. Rooklidge, or another one of our expert dentists, will ensure that the appliance fits comfortably and provides the necessary level of protection for their teeth. Prevent dental emergencies with athletic mouthguards for your active children. Call Dentistry for Children today at our Sandy office (801-871-3008) or our West Valley office (801-758-7119).
