Cavities are a real pain in the tooth.
For the people with cavities, they can cause a literal toothache. For parents, treating tooth decay can mean the pain of spending money you hoped to save for something else.
Yet, cavities are quite common for many families. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42 percent of kids between the ages of 2 and 11 have had cavities in their primary teeth.
At Dentistry For Children, we use our Solea CO2 Laser to both numb the tooth and remove the decay painlessly. Then, we’ll give your child a tooth-colored filling so his or her smile will look as good as new.
If you need to treat tooth decay or you want to help prevent it, schedule an appointment at either of our locations. You can call 801-871-3008 to reach our office in Sandy, UT and 801-758-7119 for our West Valley, UT dentist office.
Cavities Affect More Than Teeth
Tooth decay and cavities can lead to much bigger problems if left untreated.
The American Dental Association reported that children across the United States miss 51 million hours of school every year due to dental problems.
But a child doesn’t have to miss school for an untreated cavity to affect him or her in the classroom. Toothaches affect roughly 1 in 7 children, according to the Children’s Dental Health Project. A study of students in California found that kids who suffered from dental pain were four times more likely to have lower grades than their peers.
If a child is suffering from a toothache, he or she may have trouble focusing on that day’s lessons. Tooth pain also can make it difficult to eat, and not eating can affect his or her ability to concentrate.
Be Proactive About Prevention
The best option for any health issue — including cavities — is to take steps to prevent them whenever possible.
This starts at home. Teaching your kids to brush correctly — twice daily for two minutes each time with a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste — is a good start. You also want to encourage your kids to floss every day.
And you should bring your kids to Dentistry For Children a couple times per year for professional cleanings and exams. We will do our part to remove plaque or tartar buildup before a cavity can form. If they have a cavity, we can spot it early, when it can be treated easily.
While you are here, we also can provide fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a mineral that helps to repair minor decay and can strengthen teeth making it harder for cavities to form.
Dental sealants are another great option for families. Sealants act as a barrier between your kids’ teeth and the harmful bacteria that cause cavities. Sealants are proven to reduce the risk of cavities in molars by 80 percent, according to the ADA.
Keeping Kids Cavity Free
At Dentistry For Children, we recognize kids in our “Zero Cavity Club.” This could provide an incentive for your kids to keep brushing and flossing.
